The young merchant was in love with Harith’s daughter. He was distressed because she had declared that she would marry only that person who would answer her three questions. Her three questions were: The first question was that what lays inside the mysterious cave, which lies in the vicinity of their city? Her second question was that on certain nights they hear someone cry from wilderness, “I have done nothing which can benefit me this night.” She wanted to know who that person was. Why did he cry on that particular night? What did he want? Her third and final question was that a fairy called Mahpari possessed a precious stone called Shahmuhra. She wanted her suitor to find that fairy and get Shahmuhra for her. The young merchant had no idea of solving these questions and so he was crying. When he met Hatim Tai, he felt assured that Hatim Tai would help him.
