You will need:
- An empty small plastic
bottle - Large coin
- Freezer
- Tissue paper
Launch a coin into the air with nothing more
than an empty bottle, some tissue paper and
physics. Follow the experiment.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Place an empty plastic bottle into the freezer for an
hour with the lid on. - After an hour, without removing the bottle from the
freezer, remove the lid off the bottle. - Leave it inside the freezer for another 15-20 minutes.
- Wet a small square of tissue paper, place the coin
on it and cover the sides of the coin as well. - Place the tissue-covered coin on the bottle, with the
tissue side in between the coin and top of the bottle. - Leave the coin and the bottle inside the freezer for
another half an hour (or till the coin freezes). - Remove the bottle facing the coin away from you;
place your hands on either side of the bottle so
as to warm it up.
RESULT
The coin will launch into the air with great speed. When we cool the bottle inside the freezer, the air inside it contracts, making the outside air push towards the bottle. As a result, when we leave the bottle open inside the freezer, more air fills inside it. Finally by placing the wet tissue-coin over the mouth, we seal off the bottle, leaving no place for the contracted air to escape. But when we hold the bottle, the air inside begins to heat up and expand. It keeps expanding until pressure is exerted onto the coin, breaking the ice formed at the mouth, and launching it into the air.
