3. Carom Seed (Ajwain) (Part I)

Ajwain is pungent and bitter in taste. It is a great stimulant, carminative, antispasmodic, germicidal, antiseptic, digestive, anti-flatulent, heart stimulant, diuretice, anti-pyritic, expectorant and an extraordinary tonic.

Curative Properties
Cold and Cough
Rubbing the palm with 6 gms. of Ajwain tied in a potli and smelling it repeatedly cures cold.
Drinking hot water after chewing little Ajwain cures cough.
Taking ½ tsp. water of Ajwain with little salt relieves constant cough.
Chewing betel-leaf with Ajwaian at night before sleeping controls and cures dry coughing.
Influenza
Drinking boiled water with 3 gms. Ajwain and dalchini for 3 to 4 days thrice a day cures influenza.
Drinking decoction (made with 2-3 gms. Ajwain boiled in 3 cups of water till a cup remains) 4 times a day for 2-3 days cures influenza.
Flatulence, Indigestion, Low Appetite
As an antispasmodic, regular use of Ajwain is recommended.
Take ½ tsp. sat of Ajwain mixed with water in morning and evening.
Take 1 tsp. of mixture (made of 4 tsp. sat of Ajwain with 4 tsp. lemon juice and 5 drops of illaichi ark) thrice a day.
Take 1 tsp. of choorna (prepared with ground Ajwain and small harad in equal quantity, little heeng and salt to taste) with hot water after meals.
Swallow 3 gms of ground Ajwain with ¾ gm. of kaala namak twice a day.
Take ½ tsp. of choorna (made of Ajwain kali mirch, saunth taken in equal quantity) morning and evening with water.
Take Ajwain seeds soaked in lime juice after meals. This helps in digestion.
Diarrhoea and Stomach-ache
Take Ajwain and salt in the ratio of 2:1 with hot water. It cures stomach ache, improves digestion and controls diarrhoea.
Take 1 tsp. of choorna of Ajwain, sendha namak, kali mirch, illaichi and roasted small harad (1 gm. each) after meals.
Take 1 gm. powder (made with 15 gms. Ajwain, 5 gms. kala namak and ½ gm. heeng) with hot water twice a day.
Take little Ajwain and camphor with water twice a day.
Toothache
Give smoke to the aching tooth by burning Ajwain on fire and after 2 hours (of smoke) do gargles with lukewarm water (prepared by boiling 1 tsp. ground Ajwain with little salt) two to three times a day. It cures toothache.
Strangury
Taking 2 gms. of Ajwain with 3 gms. of mishri twice or thrice a day.
Polyuria
Taking 1 tsp. Ajwain with til in equal quantity twice a day eliminates polyuria.
1 tsp. powder of Ajwain and gur in equal quantity taken 4 times a day relieves polyuria and cures pain in kidneys.
Bronchitis and Asthma
Taking 1 tsp. Ajwain with hot water in morning and evening lessens sputum.
Fomentation of chest with hot seeds tied as poultice reduce sputum.
Ear-ache
Putting one or two drops of Ajwain oil relieves ear ache.
Heart-ache
Taking 1 tsp. Ajwain with hot water stimulates the heart and relieves heart-ache.
Throat-ache
Doing gargles with lukewarm Ajwain water (made by boiling 1 tsp. ground Ajwain with little salt in water) twice or thrice cures coarseness and pain in throat.
Rheumatic pains, Arthritis
Poultice of crushed Ajwain applied to painful rheumatic joints relieves pain.
Massage of affected portion with Ajwain oil relieves pain.
Foul Ulcers, Ringworm, Itchings
Taking Ajwain flower (in little quantity) helps killing germs.
Cleaning the affected part with Ajwain water kills germs.
Applying paste of Ajwain ground with hot water helps in curing ring worm, itching and removes offensive smell from foul ulcers.
Stomach worms
Taking 3 to 7 drops of Ajwain oil for few days destroys worms in stomach.
Taking Ajwain choorna with buttermilk is also useful.
Boil 25 gms ground Ajwain soaked overnight in 500 ml. water till 125 ml. water remains. Taking this decoction (as 1 dose) twice a day for 2-3 days destroys worms.
The same is to be divided and given in 2 doses for children.
Bile
Taking 2 gms. of Ajwain with 3 gm. of gur with water cures bile.
Menstrual Disorders and Post-natal Care
6 gms. choorna of Ajwain with hot milk regulates the menstrual flow of blood.
Eating laddus of Ajwain (soak washed dried ground desi Ajwain in desi ghee for 1-2 weeks. Fry 1 kg. Suji in pure ghee and mix 250 gm. Ajwain and khand to taste) after delivery.
Taking ground Ajwain with gur after delivery for few days relieves backache, cleans the uterus, stimulates digestion, increases appetite and gives strength.
Leucorrhoea
Taking paste of Ajwain (25 gms. soaked in 125 ml. of water in earthen pot overnight and ground with water) in the morning for some time controls leucorrhoea.
Female Infertility
Taking paste of Ajwain (25 gms. of Ajwain and 25 gms. mishri soaked in 125 ml. water in earthen pot overnight grounded like thandai paste) with water for 8-10 days in the morning (starting from 1st day of menses) and having moong ki dal ki chapatis in meals helps in curing infertility.
Pimples
Applying paste of 30 gms of ground Ajwain mixed with curd on face at night and washing the face in the morning with hot water cures pimples and brings glow to the face.
Urticaria
Taking ground Ajwain with gur relieves urticaria.
Stones
Taking 3-4 gms. of Ajwain daily for sometime with water help in breaking the stones and its expulsion from kidney or urinary bladder.
Wind
Taking 1 tsp. ground Ajwain with ¼ tsp. kaala namak in skimmed curd relieves wind.
As Deodorant
Ajwain is very effective in killing germs and insects and purifies the air.
Keeping a potli of Ajwain in the cupboard infested with cockroaches etc. helps in removing them.
Apart from its inherent curative properties Ajwain is cheap and easily available in every kitchen. Its regular consumption is very beneficial and does not result in any mental or physical side affects.
