15th August, 1947 is a red letter day in Indian history. On this day, India had gained freedom from the British rule. It is called Independence Day. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm throughout the country. It is a public holiday all over India. In Delhi, the day is celebrated with a great solemnity. The ramparts of the Red Fort are the centre of this ceremony. The Prime Minister arrives here early in the morning and a guard of honour is presented to him by the three services, namely army, navy and the air force. The cabinet ministers, foreign dignitaries and VIPs are present on this occasion. The Prime Minister unfurls the national flag at the ramparts on the Red Fort. The national anthem is sung. Then, the Prime Minister delivers his speech. The entire programme is directly relayed on television.
