Scene of a flood

Last summer my parents rented a holiday house in some hill station. The hill station, which was extremely picturesque, had a canal running through it. Our house stood on its own, quite close to the canal- too close as it turned out.
To begin with, the weather was absolutely fine and warm. On the evening of the fourth day of our holiday, however, the sky darkened and it began to rain. It rained continuously until we went to bed. In the morning, I woke up early to hear my father shouting. He was telling us not to go downstairs because the ground floor was flooded. He was busy carrying our belongings upstairs. He was wearing his long waterproof boots that he wears when he went for fishing. I looked out of the window and all I could see was water. Occasionally, I glimpsed at the top of a car poking out of the water and so various unidentified objects floating past.
I switched on the radio and I heard someone from the local radio station saying that the canal had bursts its banks. The announcer was announcing to stay where they were, promising that they would be rescued as soon as possible.
We sat upstairs, eating the chocolate and the fruits that my father had rescued from the kitchen, watching the rain falling, and watching the flood water rising. I was trying not to think about the fact that people might not know that our house was occupied.
Then we heard a shout. A boat had pulled up outside the house. The two men in it helped us all climb out of the window into the boat. Then they rode us off to safe and dry land.
We went home next day. Never had we been so glad to leave a holiday house!
