Unity in Diversity

The second most populous nation in the world, India offers variety in many aspects—language, dress, religion, color and appearance. The constitution has given equal rights to all the people in respect of language, culture and heritage. Today Indians are free to wear any dress of choice and can follow any religion. The seeds of national unity are present in our culture. Our religious books, epics, music and dances, festivals are all common. Hence, these sources of unity are a cementing force.
The best example of India’s unity is diversity of our defence services. In our defence services, people from all the communities and faith—Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Christian serve to sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of the country. They live together and fight in the national interest as a team.
Though the literature of different regions of India is written in different languages but there is a common note of unity in them. Sanskrit literature like the Vedas, Dharma Shastras and Upanishads are the source of all regional literatures.
The most striking feature is the English language. It has proved to be the most powerful instrument for the integration and unification of India. Just like the beads in a string; our culture, religion, customs are all bound together as a unit. India, of course, offers unity in diversity.
