Wisdom and Politeness

There is a popular saying, “One should not lay emphasis on the physical features, but on the code of conduct”. This conduct is the image of intellectuality and politeness, which forms the personality of a successful person. In the era of modernization, everything is changing at a fast pace; materialism may have turned upside the human concern and visions; still, people are impressed and convinced by intelligence and politeness. In fact, politeness and internal awakening are the only two key factors, which are found in an impressive personality.

BLISS OF HIGHER VISION
He who is satisfied with wisdom and direct vision of truth, who has conquered the senses and is ever undisturbed, to whom a lump of earth, a stone and gold are the same, that one is said to be a saint of established wisdom.

Magic of Wisdom

An intelligent and a polite person is manifold happy and satisfied in comparison to an attractive or a wealthy person. Intelligence and politeness are those two valuable ornaments of our lives, which provide us with popularity and calmness. Such people rule the hearts of people at their homes, workplaces, and in the entire world. Intelligence is a mixture of education, thoughts, mind, character and ability, whereas politeness is the sum-total of generosity, emotions, affection, high ideals, honour and respect.
Intelligence is such a good quality, with the help of which any person can establish his credibility. Egotist and haughty people often bow to intelligent persons. Any person irrespective of his wealth, health and education, is not intelligent; he has to withdraw himself on certain occasions. It is a hard fact that the more intelligent a person is the more his personality excels.
A person’s living style, his conduct, his way of talking, all together reveal his intelligence. If a person besides being intelligent, has a handsome personality, it is an added excellence.
“An animal’s entire life survives on his natural instincts. Only at its edges a small band of intelligence is present, whereas the entire basis of the human being’s life is brain. Natural instincts very rarely occur as a stroke of lightning.”
—Ramdhari Singh Dinkar
Beauty with Brains
The current beauty contests are also based on the hypothesis of ‘beauty with brains’. The judges of the selection committee also give weightage and preference to those candidates, who possess ravishing beauty and are highly intelligent with a sharp presence of mind. We may recall the incident of 1992, wherein Madhu Sapre, a contestant of modelling session, was on the verge of getting crowned as Miss Universe but at the last moment, she failed. She could not, in the intelligence round, reach the expected level and it resulted in her slipping down to the third position.

The organisers of Miss Universe contest asked Miss Sapre, what best possible way, she would utilize the prize money. She replied, “I shall build a stadium.” This reply of her proved to be a final nail in her coffin. Alas, if she could have wished to feed the underprivileged, or perhaps built a large orphanage for the impoverished children, it would have surely led her steps to victory.
This ordinarily looking young lass almost touched the heights in beauty contests and this incident proved to be a source of inspiration for other Indian beauties. Indian girls now very well realised, that apart from having beautiful bodies, the art of expressing clear, straightforward, excellent reply is also equally important and decisive. This very point led to the crowning of Sushmita Sen as Miss Universe on 21st May 1994, and similarly on 19 Nov, 1994 Ashwariya Rai as Miss world. The basis of the selection of both these beautiful girls was not only their beauty, but the impact created by their intellegence, was the most impressive. The presence of mind and understanding of Ashwariya is evident from her reply to the question asked by the organisers, “If given the power and opportunity, which incident of history, would she like to change?”
Ash: Postponement of waving the Second World War.
This opened the doors of prosperity for Ashwariya. The people of Sun City (South Africa) were overjoyed on witnessing for the first time the conjunction of beauty and brains.
Development of Wisdom
According to an ancient proverb:
“Budhi-Barsaya Bal- matasaya”

A person with brains rules the world. Brain exists in all the beings; the need is to develop it. Saint Asa Ram Babu on the importance of brain opines,” If a person masters the art of using his mind and brain, humans in this universe live in happiness, peace and affectionate environment. He can experience more pleasure on this earth than in heaven. The experience of salvation can be achieved before and after death here on this earth itself.”
Quite some time ago, an eminent scientist Dr. Carl Crompton, on his visit to his sister’s house in India, witnessed an incident. His sister had engaged an electrician in her house to instal certain wires. Time and again, the electrician called upon the lady to enquire where the wires were to be put. At what height were these to be installed? How many sockets were required? This had become a routine and finally the lady got irritated and called the electrician and said,”You very well know what I want; use your common sense and complete the job and leave.”
The electrician politely replied with seriousness, “Madam, common sense is the gift of God, which is a rare commodity and sparsely available. I just have technical sense.” One day, an enthusiastic young man got hold of ‘Make yourself kits’ on a transistor. Along with it came the instruction manual, giving the description of assembling the transistor. After reading the guidelines, many a time, the youth was unsuccessful in assembling the same. Soon tired of it, he took it to a radio mechanic, along with the guide book for reassembling the same. The mechanic looked at the parts for some time and within some time, he assembled the transistor. The anxious young man was surprised, and could not hold his curiosity and asked, “How could you assemble the instrument without even referring to the book?” The reply came back saying that as he was uneducated and could not read the guide book, so he thought coolly and did the job.
Increase Your General Knowledge
If any person is in possession of great powers like concentration, memory and imagination but lacks the most important element of common sense then his efficiency is similar to that of a spineless body. Such a person although may adjust himself as a student or in an office, but when it comes to leadership, responsibilities, and completion of target like qualities, he shall slump to his inabilities.

Here, by the meaning of common sense, we are not talking of a person who just happens to accept the objectives on the principle of as and where basis only, followed by the comment, “It’s known to all.” This artificial common sense is a real enemy of efficiency and success. The main reason of this is that it does not depend on truthful facts, but it is based on hypotheses. True common sense is the second form of intelligence. It sees all around, with eyes wide open and absorbs all that is required accordingly. What would be the result and of the task, if accomplished, and to find the remedies of failures, all are the efficiency of true common sense. Such persons never hurry at things, rather remain always cautious, keeping in view the dangers lying ahead. Please remember that the development of brain takes place, if newspapers, magazines, articles are read regularly. Just reading news-papers and magazines is not sufficient only, but the discovery may be discussed amongst your family and friends alike at home and offices regularly. By using your brain, you can always impress others very often.

Modesty of the President
India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, was presented with a valuable fountain pen, with a golden nib. It was very dear to the President and he used the pen always to complete his official and other matters. One day, while clearing the office table, by a head poen Tulsi, the pen slipped from his fingers and fell on the ground, breaking into pieces. The drop of ink spilled on the carpet and the President’s clothes. Seeing all this, the President got angry and scolded Tulsi, on account of his irresponsible behaviour, expelling him instantly from his personal quota to other duties.
But soon after the President despaired, and was filled with remorse on realizing the mistake. He felt guilty of having scolded the peon. He immediately summoned the peon and apologized for his act of stubbornness.
Tulsi was taken aback. He could not believe his eyes. The President, the highest post in a Sovereign, was standing with folded hands in front of him. Tulsi bowed his head towards this gesture of great politeness and started to cry loudly. The very next day, Tulsi was reinstated in the personal service of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Great are such personalities.
Ornament of Politeness
Impressive personalities always wear the ornament of politeness. There is no doubt that a polite person is highly intelligent. To enhance politeness, one has to control his anger. Even if you are angry, try to remain calm for some duration and after that do whatsoever you feel. As far as possible do not exhibit your anger instantly. If you do, rather than suppressing your anger, you flare it up.
In case any person passes wrong comments, or taunts you, do not reciprocate immediately. Just think as to what has been said by other person; whether is it true or not. If you find the answer in the affirmative, gladly accept your weakness; otherwise, a suitable straightforward reply must be given adopting the principle of tit for tat, depending upon your aim, mental capacity and capabilities.
Keep in Mind

  • Do not speak very high about your education and skills. Talk in simple and plain language with educated and normal people. Do not use the words ‘Tum’ or ‘Tu’, in your conversation.
  • Use the word ‘Aap’. Do not speak loudly. Try to speak less. Think more and read.
  • Try to remain calm. Do not cut jokes at weaker persons. Such a gesture will make your personality hollow.
  • Politeness and simplicity in talks, calmness of character, code of dress should be cultivated regularly. To keep laughing now and then, rolling of eyes, sexual gestures, advances, exhibiting of these gestures lead to the lowering of our personality.
  • One should regularly read ancient scriptures (and self analyse). This act will lead you to the heights of humanity.
  • It is never so important to write to others, but it is of the utmost importance to reply to every letter even though it may be brief.
  • We should also give the benefit of doubt to others.
  • In this world, with the help of rules, cunningness may play, its role in accomplishing our task, but we lose our prestige in the eyes of the world/society. Hence we should not believe in cunningness.
  • Always keep in mind the amount of hard labour and intensity put in any task, results in the multiplication of success rate too.
  • If you so desire that everyone must call you a ‘good person’ then do not call yourself to be good.
  • Remember, a lion also has to protect himself from flies.

Principles of Truth
‘Vidya dadati Vinayam’-a wise man should always be polite and humble and not proud and haughty. If politeness cannot be gained by education, what is the benefit of being educated? As the tree laden with fruits, bends down, similarly wise men are more polite and humble. Knowledgeable people always yearn for more knowledge; the more they know, the less they show. Whereas a person posing to be the most sensible person is the biggest fool on this earth.
