Snowstorm Blues

“Hurry up, Alexa!” I shouted as I struggled with the door knob, which proved difficult to turn in my heavy gloves, “We are going to be late!”
My sister, Alexa, appeared from around the corner and helped me with the door knob before putting on her own bulky gloves.
We were going to meet a few other friends in order to shovel snow. There had been a gigantic snowstorm that had blown out the power, which hadn’t been repaired until a few minutes ago.
I smiled as we approached the meeting spot. There was a good turnout. Our cousin, Cassie, waved.

I looked around at all the bundled girls, all engaged in different conversations. “Where’s Erica?” I asked, “She promised she’d be here.”
“I don’t know,” Cassie replied, “We called her house an hour ago, but there was no reply.”
“If she doesn’t want to come, it is her loss. Let’s get to work,” Alexa said.
A few hours later, we all gathered at our house sipping hot chocolate, when Erica knocked at the door. “Where were you?” I asked as I let her in.
“I’ve been at home! Why didn’t you guys call?” she asked.
“We did; why didn’t you answer?” Cassie snapped.
“You must have called when I was blow-drying my hair, I didn’t hear it ring,” Erica explained.
Alexa stood up. “Really, Erica; why didn’t you help us shovel?”
Why didn’t Alexa believe Erica?

Solution
Erica couldn’t have been blow-drying her hair, because the power was out. She told everyone that she was sorry that she tried to get out of helping shovel the snow.
