Dhirubhai’s reliance at new heights

The speciality of Relance Industrial Group was the thinking and working capacity of Dhirubhai Ambani. The scale of projects being undertaken was living proof of that. The gigantic Jamnagar refinery was seen to be believed. The refinery was set up with a capital of Rs. 25,000 crores which was mind boggling by Indian standards at that time. The complex refines 27 million barrels of crude oil each year. The Jamnagar Reliance complex also has world’s largest Peroxilin Unit which has 1.4 million ton each year production capacity. There also is Polypropelin Unit with 0.6 million ton production capacity. When Reliance Group had started work on Janmagar project then the other industrial houses had run it down saying it was too ambitious to become a reality. To assess the feasibility of the project the group appointed some foreign expert to study and survey the plans and work. In their report the experts opined that possibility of the success of Reliance project was nil. But Dhirubhai did not lose hope and nor was project shelved. He simply made some changes in the strategy. As the construction work on refinery began the elder son Mukesh started going at the site every week. A family member, Mr. Hetal Meswani was posted permanently at Jamnagar to oversee the works. The work progressed at fast pace and the construction phase was completed in record 36 months. The fast completion of the work resulted in its production cost coming down by 30-50 percent per ton compared to the other refineries of Asia. Today, Jamnagar Reliance Oil Refinery processes 25% of India’s total crude.
In 1986 Dhirubhai Ambani suffered a heart attack and he had to drastically curtail his activities. All the responsibilities of Reliance operations and financial affairs were taken over by Mukesh and Anil. The experience of Dhirubai was the gorup’s biggest asset still. Five percent of the country’s total annual revenue collections come from Reliance Industrial Group beside contributing impressive share in GDP. After getting rights over 14 oil blocks from the central government for exploration and production, Reliance has become largest crude oil producer of the country. In addition to it the Reliance groups have been expanding into other sectors at a vast scale and fast pace as envisaged by Dhirubhai Ambani.
