As soon as Rajiv came to power, he started asking concrete steps to remove corruption, but there were some people who were waiting to tarnish the image of Rajiv. Bofers and fax-fax issues uere brought in front of the people. These issues put a question mark on Rajiv’s may of working but he gave an explanation to every question asked by the oppositions in parliament. Imstigation committee had been set up on fare-fax issue. It was the biggest ever investigation in the history of India. Investigation had also been started on Bofers defence deal. Rajiv also told the swedish government for investifation. After investigation Swedish government gave a clean chit to Rajiv government and told there were no frauds in dealings. On this Rajiv said—“The people who are making allegatious of fraud in Bofors dealing should give us prof. Everythign will be clear. We will not hestitate in taking actions. Whenever will be found guilty, will be punished. Nobody in begger than law, we will prove it.”
Oppsitions leaders made this issue very hot. It was an serious issue. All the defence policies were connected to it. This issue had been made deliberately hot to tarnish the image of Rajiv. This was the cause, people trapped in these suspicious and loosed faith in Rajiv. At that time V.P. Singh deperated from congress on the matter of some internal dispute. He made a separate party ‘Janta Dal’ which energed as the strongest opposition party against congress.
In 1989, general elections for 9th Lok Sabha were held. In elections Congress didn’t get full majerity but its performance was good in South India. In north India its party had to see the face of debeat. This debeat was due to the scattering of some leaders from congress. At that time Rajiv come in front of the people as the opposition leader. V.P. Singh became the Prime Minister of India. On his fromal ceremony, Rajiv said — We humbly respect the decision of our countryman. We promise to give our full support to the new government.
In the form of opposition leader, he used to put his views on every matter in parliament. He used to meet more and more faces and try to solve their problems.
After coming to power, V.P. Singh boosted the investigation procedure of Bofors case. This issue was strugly raised due to the intend quauels of Janta Dal. Rajiv was made guilty on comption changes and investigation procedure was paced to prove such changes; but not fruitful result was obtained. She investigation couldnot proved the charges.
The intarnal differences between Janta Dal inseased day by day. They started fighting for Chair. They had promised the citizens to give a heat and clean government but became unsuccesful and were busy in their internal differences. She wave of frustration move on throughout the country. It also effected our economy. At that time V.P. Singh created despair by applying Mandal Commission. The youngest feeled to be insulted and many of them suicided and undugune self-immotation. This burning issue engripped the whole country. V.P. Singh promised for the development of weaker section but the government has shell busy in sorting out their internal difference’ between his party members. They didn’t care for the development of the country. Whereas Rajiv made himself engaged on listening to the problems of poors by visiting villages. He arranged houses for their living, gave them land for ploughing. He wanted to know that why the peoples cannot enjoy the benefits of the policies made for their welfare. When he was P.M., he made Panchayati Raj law. By this law, an old dream of Mahatma Gandhi to see village democracy was amde into realiting. In this along with weaker sections womans were also given reservation. He wanted the poor people to live in dignity. He tried his best to provide justice to them when he was not in power. After coming to power, Rajiv chalked out a twenty-point programme which was like this—
