35. Important Zoological Terms

Zoology is an important branch of biology. This chapter describes some important terms used in zoology.
Adaptations : The structural, functional and behavioural changes developed in living organisms over long period of time to adjust to specific environment for survival.
Aggregation : An act of collection or getting together.
Anabolism : Synthesis of complex molecules from simpler ones.
Ageing : Process of gradual deterioration of body cells, tissues or organs after adulthood and leading to death.
Biosphere : A sum total of all living beings and their physical environment on earth.
Catabolism : Breakdown of complex organic molecules into simple ones.
Closed System : Without any exchange of matter with environment.
Death : Permanent breakdown and finally stopping of vital functions of body.
Ecosystem : Biotic and abiotic components of a geographical area.
Energy Transformation : Change of one form of energy into another form.
Entropy : A state of randomness or disorder.
Gerontology : Science concerned with the study of the process of ageing.
Homeostasis : State of maintenance of constancy of internal environment.
Interaction : Relationship between participants in the aggregate.
Intussusceptional Growth : Internal growth found in living organism.
Metabolism : A sum total of all chemical reactions occuring in the living beings.
Open System : Living system which can exchange materials and energy with environment.
Organisation : Arrangement of smaller components into large ones and so on in a hierarchy.
Population : Living organisms of same species found in same geographical area.
Reproduction : Capacity of producing young-ones by existing individuals.
Steady State : When rate of input of energy and matter is equal to output of energy and matter.
Transcription : Formation of M-RNA by DNA.
Life Span : The average longevity of an organism from birth to death is called life span.
