A guinea pig is neither a pig, nor is it from Guinea. It is a rodent. Long ago, in parts of South America, guinea pigs were a food delicacy. After the discovery of America, they were eaten in Europe, too. The only people who still eat guinea pigs are the natives of Peru. Guinea pigs have small, naked rounded ears and no tail. Their toes have broad claws. They eat vegetables and can survive without water. They begin to run around just a few hours after their birth. They are kept as pets all over the world as they are very easy to handle. They can sleep with their eyes open or closed.
