What is Haemoglobin?

Haemoglobin is an iron-containing protein present in the blood. It carries oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues and then, carbon dioxide back from these tissues to the lungs. The iron in haemoglobin imparts red colour to blood. The normal range for haemoglobin is 12-16 gm/dL for females and 14-18 gm/dL for males. A low haemoglobin level in a person indicates anaemia, a condition in which red blood cells are either less in number or have less haemoglobin. High levels of haemoglobin are found in smokers.
