The Western pond turtle has a dark brown to olive-coloured shell that has lighter marbling patterns. The dark head and legs have yellow markings. Their natural habitats are slow-moving streams, marshes, ponds and lakes with muddy bottoms. They hide under logs and leaf litter. Insects, frogs, frogs’ eggs, fish and dead animals make up the diet of these opportunistic feeders.
