Why do people burp?

A burp is also known as ‘belch’. The extra air from our esophagus, trapped for various reasons there, is released as a burp. Our food, when ingested, goes through the esophagus to our stomach. Our body uses enzymes made out of acids, bacteria and chemicals, to break down food into nutrients. These nutrients provide our body with energy. It is while eating food, if we swallow air or drink carbonated drinks, these gases come back up through our esophagus as a burp or belch.
