Zebras, donkeys and horses might look like they belong to the same family; yet, there are very important differences among them. Their tails make a big difference. Zebras and donkeys have thin tails with tufts while horses have beautiful tails full of long hair. The former primarily use their tails to swat away flies, while horses use them for fly protection, warmth and to convey emotions like fear, enthusiasm, irritation, unhappiness, pain or sign of aggression. A horse’s tail is an extension of its spine; made of skin and muscle, it is covered with long hair.
