Axilspot hogfish inhabit lagoons and seaward reefs feeding on molluscs and crustaceans. Males are reddish-brown with a white posterior and large dark spots on the fins. Juveniles and females are black with a few white spots. Adults grow to a size of 20 cm. They exhibit distinct pairing during breeding and are oviparous. It is a popular aquarium fish.
