The axolotl is actually an amphibian larva thatskips metamorphosis. Adults are gilled with hugeheads, lidless eyes and underdeveloped limbs. Three pairs of external gills behind the head are used to breathe, but this fish can also breathe through its skin. It feeds on worms, insects and small fish by suction. Its lifespan is about of 10 years.
