The Otidiphaps nobilis (scientific name) or magnificent ground pigeon is commonly found in hilly and mountainous forests of New Guinea, as also the islands of Aru, Batanta, Yapen and a few others. Approximately 18 inches in height, this bird is a large ground dwelling pigeon. It has a black head, with an iridescent blue green neck. Chest and underparts are blackish, with a tinge of bluish-purple. The back and mantle are a reddish purple which shades to chestnut on the wings. It literally has a flat tail, black in colour. Its diet consists of seeds and fruits found on the forest floor. With nests on the ground, its average clutch has only 1 egg, incubated for 28-29 days. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
