Rufous-headed Hornbill

The Aceros waldeni (scientific name) or rufous-headed hornbill is endemic to the rainforests of Negros and Panay Islands, the Philippines. 23-25 inches in length, this medium-sized bird has a rufous head, neck and upper chest. The orbital and gular skin is bare and bright orange (white with a bluish tinge in females). The rest of the body including the tail is glossy black. The tail, however, also has a broad white band. Its diet is comprised mostly of fruits. But sometimes, they are known to eat lizards, mice and nestling birds. The clutch has 2 eggs laid in a nest, created in a tree-cavity and sealed up from the outside. The clutch is incubated for 125 days. Its IUCN listing is CRITICALLY ENDANGERED.
