Makira Moorhen

The Pareudiastes silvestris (scientific name) or Makira Moorhen is endemic to the forests of Makira Island, part of the Solomon Islands. However, there is concern that this bird may already be extinct since it has not been seen since 1953. Villagers in the area claim to have spotted the bird, but no official record since 1953 has existed. Not exceeding 10.6 inches in length, with plumage which is glossy black with an iridescent blue shine on the neck and head, and brown tinge on the wings, this bird has red legs and a beak. It also has a grey-blue shield starting from above the beak extending to the forehead. Almost nothing is known of this bird’s diet or breeding patterns. Its IUCN listing is CRITICALLY ENDANGERED.
