Carpet Beetle

Carpet-Beetle

Common name : Varied carpet beetle

Scientific name : Anthrenus verbasci

Family : Dermestidae

Native to : Europe, North Africa, Nearctic Ecozone, East Palearctic Ecozone

Interesting fact : Due to its weird appearance, the larvae of the carpet beetle are known as the woolly bears!

3.5 mm in length, the carpet beetle has a spherical body. Its lifespan is quite unlike any other insect, with the egg hatching and larvae reaching adulthood anywhere from 1 to 3 years based on the environment. The adults feed on pollen and the larvae feed on anything made of natural fibres as a result they damage carpets, clothes, furniture, etc. at home. Their habitat includes gardens, which enables them to infest houses.
