Common name : Common bag moth
Scientific name : Liothula omnivora
Family : Psychidae
Native to : New Zealand
Interesting fact : These bugs were described first in
1878 by Fereday.
With a wingspan of 38 mm, the common bag moth males are black, while the females are wingless and look like maggots. The diet of the larvae is comprised of foliage and leaves of coniferous shrubs and exotic broad leaved trees. As soon as the larvae hatch, they begin to build a silken ‘bag’ like structure, which is made of various environmental materials. Once they have filled themselves on leaves, they seal the bag and pupate. These cases are connected to trees, branches, stones or rocks.
