Common name : European corn borer
Scientific name : Ostrinia nubilalis
Family : Crambidae
Native to : Europe
Interesting fact : A pest to the maize and corn plants, this moth was introduced to the United States, from where it has spread further to the Rocky Mountains and Canada.
Only 1 inch in length and 1 inch in wingspan, the European corn borer is light-yellowish brown in colour. Their diet is comprised of the ears and stalks of the corn, where they tunnel their way through the corn, resulting in it falling over. A female moth lays eggs on the underside of leaves in a cluster. Once they have matured inside the eggs, the caterpillars chew their shells to come out.
