Giant Weta

Giant-Weta

Common name : Giant weta

Scientific name : Deinacrida

Family : Anostostomatidae

Native to : New Zealand

Interesting fact : The giant weta is not so social as the other weta. Its scientific name means ‘fierce grasshopper’ in Greek.

At least 10 cm only in body length, the giant weta weighs around 35 g. In fact, the giant weta very often outweighs a mouse. Because of its weight, it cannot fly, but many species of the giant weta can definitely jump quite high. Their diet varies, but most of the species love carrots! Their habitat also varies from woodlands to caves. On account of being hunted by rats, the giant weta is gradually coming close to extinction.
