Common name : Australian guava moth
Scientific name : Coscinoptycha improbana
Family : Carposinidae
Native to : Australia
Interesting fact : Due to its affinity for the guava fruit, this insect has been given the name ‘guava moth’.
The guava moth has a small wingspan, not exceeding 15 mm in length. Its diet is comprised of fruits including guava, citrus, feijoa, peach and macadamia. The eggs are laid close to the food source, as a result of which the larvae bore into the fruits initially to feed while the fruit is still on the tree. Once they have matured, they leave through an exit created after the fruit has fallen to the ground. As a result, they are considered as major pests for these fruit trees.
