Prince Gamani was his father’s hundredth son. He had the best teacher among all his brothers. He was a monk by the name Arahant, the ‘Pure One’. When they grew up, the princes took charge of a province each. When it was Gamani’s time to take charge, Arahant, his teacher, advised him to stay back and help his father. Thus, Gamani earned the trust and affection of his subjects. When they had to choose the next king, they chose him. Gamani’s enraged elder brothers declared war on him. King Gamani asked his old teacher, Arahant, for advice. As Arahant said, Gamani divided his wealth and sent each brother his share. He also refused to fight. The brothers realised that the share was too small. Moreover, they would have to fight among themselves to acquire more. It was meaningless to fight. Thus, they accepted King Gamani’s rule and all of them lived together peacefully.
