The Gift of Insults

Once, there was a Bodhisattva. He was quite old, but the most enlightened man. He had many students who studied under him. One day, an infamous monk arrived in the village and challenged the Bodhisattva to discuss on a topic. The Bodhisattva gladly accepted the monk’s challenge. As the two prepared for the discussion, the monk started insulting the Bodhisattva. He even threw dirt and spit at his face. He called him many names and cursed him. However, the Bodhisattva just stood motionless and calm. Finally, the monk was tired and left in shame. The students gathered around the Bodhisattva and asked him, “Why did you listen to all his insults and not answer back?” The Bodhisattva replied, “If someone gives you a gift and you do not receive it, to whom would the gift belong?”

Moral: What you don’t receive, you don’t get.
