It is the second largest freshwater species of an otter. Their feet are clawless; they are distinct due to white facial markings. Their whiskers are very sensitive and act as sensors to pick up movements. Females deliver litters of two to five young in early spring. The biggest threat to their existence is from man, who hunts them for fur.
