Mass Scavenging

Mass-Scavenging

The Mass Scavenging ritual is a funerary ritual that is practised by the indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest coast of North America.

Do you know: The members of this indigenous group let loose wild animals on their dead people.

According to this custom, the bodies of all the dead members of the group are thrown into a pit that is in the vicinity of the city or town where they reside. Once the members are in the pit, wild animals are let loose so that they may feed on the bodies. This ritual is said to denote that the deceased no longer have any belongings in the real world, not even their own bodies.
