The red hartebeest is a large, reddish-fawn coloured antelope with a sloping back and long narrow face and a small black tail. Both sexes have heavily ringed black-grey horns. Its diet consists of medium-height grass. The life expectancy of a red hartebeest is around 19 years. Following a gestation period of eight months, single calves are normally born before summer rains.
