The appearance and the size of a sambar vary widely across its range. They have hairy coats that can be anything from yellowish-brown to dark grey in colour and, while it is usually uniform in colour. Some sub-species have chestnut marks on the rump and under parts. Sambars also have a small but dense mane, more prominent in males.
