After his encounter with Sursa, Hanuman resumed his journey to Lanka. Suddenly, he felt himself being pulled down! ‘Lord Ram! What is happening now? Who is dragging me down?’ he wondered. Puzzled, Hanuman looked around and realised that his shadow had been trapped in the ocean. He suddenly remembered Sugreev’s forewarning about a demoness named Simhika who could catch any flying creature by just holding its shadow. Once again, Hanuman grew to an enormous size. Seeing this, Simhika too opened her mouth as wide as a cave to swallow him. Without wasting any time, Hanuman turned himself to a tiny size and flew down the demoness’ throat. Simhika was glad to have gobbled up Hanuman, but he tore open all her vital organs with his nails. He then expanded his size until she split apart and fell dead in the ocean. Hanuman soared into the sky again, as the sharks rushed to feed on the dead demoness.
