Hatod and Cebu Burial

Hatod-and-Cebu-Burial

Hatod or ‘bringing the dead to his destination’ is one of the funerary customs performed by the locals of the Cebu province, Philippines.

Do you know: Before the coffin of the deceased is placed in a funeral car, all the relatives must pass under the coffin once so as to help them move on.

The relatives of the deceased are not allowed to bathe or comb their hair near the place of the funeral. They must not let their tears fall on the coffin glass so as to let the soul begin its journey peacefully. For the funeral, people must walk to the church and the cemetery. This ritual is known as hatod. Food prepared for those who are present must also be consumed only at the cemetery.
