Vaali was a great warrior. He was stunned that Rama had shot him while hiding behind a tree. As he lay dying, Rama and Lakshmana came up to him. The dying Vaali looked at Rama and asked him, “You are a warrior and a prince, renowned for your right conduct. Why have you killed me by deceit instead of killing me in a fair fight? I could have helped you get Seeta back from Ravana. So, why have you behaved in a manner so unworthy of you?” Rama explained to him that he had done wrong in taking away his brother’s wife. For this wrong conduct he had to be punished. Besides, Rama had already asked for Sugreeva’s help and given his word in return for Sugreeva’s promise. Vaali was satisfied with Rama’s reply and felt he had received the blessing of the Lord in dying at his hands.
