The Eagle

A lot of chicks had hatched out and there was great celebration in the hen house. The cuddly little balls of yellow feathers began to scurry around. Suddenly Crest, the rooster, crowed loudly, alerting the hens. They hurried to collect the chicks and looked around. A large eagle was hovering above the farm! Danger! A meeting was held that evening. It was decided that the chicks couldn’t go out of the hen house without protection. The chicks protested loudly, but Crest told them to keep quiet! A school was set up with Peggy, the oldest hen, as the teacher. All the chicks would be taught scratching the ground to find food, and when their claws and beaks became stronger they would have classes in self-defence. They must know pecking and clawing to keep eagles out! Now, the chicks went out with all the hens and Mrs Peggy held classes every afternoon. The eagle had flown away!
