I am Brownie, Mr Douglas’ horse. On market days I take him with a cartful of stuff to the village where he sells it all. He gives me oats and hay while I wait. On some days I work on the farm, taking him to the fields, collecting fruits and vegetable, carrying some of the smaller animals and birds. My favourite day, however, is Sunday. I go to church with Mrs Douglas and her little girl, Karen. It’s a treat, for Karen is the kindest little girl I know. She pats me and gives me a lump of sugar or an apple before we trot off. On Sunday afternoons, Karen’s friend Bob comes over and I take both of them for rides. One day, Karen was ill and I couldn’t take her out. But soon, she was better and now every day I take her out.
