Jenny had a bet with Peter that they could walk from the farmhouse to the old ruined church in the dark. Their parents, Farmer Beale and his wife, knew nothing about this. So when Mrs Beale found that the two children were not in their beds, she screamed in panic! Mr Beale and the farm hands ran out looking for the children carrying torches and sticks. Mr Beale even took his old gun along! What if there was a bear? They searched the woods and the village. But there was no trace of Jenny or Peter. Finally, someone came running. “There are two kids in the old church!” They all ran to the ruined church. There were Jenny and Peter, fast asleep inside on a broken wooden bench! Mr Beale hugged them and carried them home to Mrs Beale. “Papa, we lost our way in the dark! And we fell asleep!” said Jenny.
