On June 9, 1946, the people of Helsinki sighted a brilliant light, with a smoke trail and the sound of thunder; its luminous trail had been visible for 10 minutes. This was repeated the next night with the light turning and taking the direction it had come. Some 2000 reported sightings were logged, 200 of them being on radar. It was thought to originate from a rocket facility, known as Scandinavian Ghost Rockets, where the Russians were conducting long-range tests. That theory was ruled out because no recognisable rocket fragments were ever found. Later, the reports of similar sightings from Hungary, Greece, Morocco and Portugal started coming in, making this a truly global phenomenon.
