Waffle Rock

A rock on display at the US state of West Virginia has a regular waffle-like geometric pattern across its surface resembling a Waffle maker. Tectonic plate shifts made folds in the sandstone, creating cracks. Iron oxide from percolating water mixed with sand grains formed a material, resistant to weathering. As the sandstone rock eroded away, it left behind the hard iron-oxide waffle pattern on the rock. Geology, over millions of years, has created amazing patterns. Similar boulders have been found in Monongahela, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Over the years many alternative theories have evolved–aliens, giant reptiles and ancient Indian societies.
