Henryk Arctowski was born on 21st July 1871 in Warsaw, Poland, and he died on 21st February 1958 (aged 87 years) in Bethesda, United States. A Polish scientist and explorer who was the first person to spend winters in the Antarctic region where Henryk performed scientific work and observations himself with just an assistant. Various geographical features have been named after him. He published more than 144 papers in geophysics and geodesy. He was also instrumental in restoring Polish Independence after World War I.
