Etienne Brule was born in 1592 in Champigny-sur-Marne, France, and he died in June 1633 (aged 41 years), Great Lakes, Canada. Etienne was the first European explorer to journey beyond the Saint Lawrence river into what is today Canada. He explored the Georgian bay and Huron Lake and Humber river which is in today’s Toronto. He lived with the Indians to learn their language and their ways. He worked as a guide and interpreter with Samuel de Champlain who also sent Brule on a number of exploratory missions.

Do you know: Etienne Brule has left no description of his explorations and his work has only been recognized through the mention in the works of Champlain, Sagard and Brebeuf.
