Ahmad ibn Fadlan was born in 877 AD in Baghdad, Iraq, and he died in 960 AD (aged 83 years). Ahmad was an Arab traveller known for his writing about his travels as an Embassy member of Baghdad to the King of Volga Bulgars, now in Russia. He called his book ‘Risala’. He provided very detailed descriptions of the Volga Vikings. Ahmad was with the party in the capacity of the religious advisor for Islamic law. The delegation covered about 4,000 km through Bukhara, now Uzbekistan and through the regions of the Caspian and Ural rivers, giving the account of the people there.
Do you know: Ahmad thought of the Bulgar people and described them as perfect physical specimens, tall and blond with ruddy complexions but found their sense of hygiene disgusting.
