Louis Claude de Freycinet was born on 7th August 1779  in Drome, France, and he died on 18th August 1841 (aged 62 years) in France. Louis was a French navigator, cartographer and explorer who circumnavigated the Earth and he is attributed with making the first map to show the full outline of Australia. He had set out to explore the coasts of Australia and covered much of the area previously discovered by Mattew Flinders. He undertook the circumnavigation of the Earth with the aim of collecting not only geographical data but also data in astronomy and meteorology and natural history.

Do you know: Louis Claude de Freycinet managed to get his wife Rose aboard the ship Uranie, disguised as a man. She was the first woman to record her experience of circumnavigating the world.
