There was a pious hare, who lived in a forest. He prayed every day. Once, there was a festival which involved fasting and offering food to guests. The hare had no delicacies to offer his guests. So he decided to offer himself as food. Then he lit a bonfire. God learnt about the hare’s pledge and wanted to test him. He appeared in front of the hare disguised as a hermit and pretended to be hungry. “I’m tired and hungry, son! Have you anything for me to eat?” he asked. The saintly hare said, “Indeed sir! Please accept me.” Then he jumped into the fire. God was so happy that He brought the hare back to life. God said to the hare, “From this day on, you will also have a place in the sky.” That is why, even to this day, we can see the hare on the moon.
