Romolo Gessi was born on 30th April 1831 in Ravenna, Italy, and he died on 1st May 1881 (aged 50 years) in Suez, Egypt. Romolo was an Italian soldier and explorer who is well-known for having explored North-east Africa, especially Sudan and the Nile River. He fought with the British forces in the Crimean war where he first met General Charles Gordon. He invited Romolo to accompany him to Sudan. There he participated in the exploration of the Upper Nile. He was also the first person to circumnavigate Lake Albert and map its descent. He also conducted the explorations of the interiors of Sudan.

Do you know: Romolo suppressed a revolt of the Arab traders there. For this service rendered by him, he was given the title of Pasha, by the Khedive of Egypt and came to be known as Gessi Pasha.
