James Augustus Grant was born on 11th April 1827 in Nairn, United Kingdom, and he died on 11th February 1892 (aged 64 years) in Nairn, United Kingdom. An explorer, author and armed forces officer, James explored the eastern equatorial Africa. He joined the Indian army and served during the Indian mutiny of 1857. He later returned to England and joined John Speke in the Nile expedition. James collected valuable specimens for botanical studies and carried out independent investigations. He published an account of the journey in which he described the everyday life and habits of the natives. He also served in the intelligence department of the Abyssinian expedition.
