Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt was born on 14th September 1769 in Berlin, Germany, and he died on 6th May 1859 (aged 89 years) in Berlin, Germany. A Prussian geographer, Alexander explored Latin America and described it for the first time scientifically, laying the foundation of modern geomagnetic and meteorological monitoring. He was one of the first people to propose that the land bordering the Atlantic Ocean, South America and Africa, was once joined. Between 1799 and 1804, he travelled extensively in Latin America, exploring and describing it for the first time from a modern scientific point of view.
