Ingolfur Arnarson was born on around in 844 (59), Rivedal, Sunnfjord, Sogn og Fjordane, Norge and died on 903 (51-67) in Reykjavik, Island. Considered one of the first Nordic settlers in Iceland, Ingolfur gave the name Reykjavik to the area in 874. He had to leave Norway because of getting into a feud and decided to settle on the island that others had found in the Atlantic. The Irish slaves killed his brother and Ingolfur hunted them down on an island and killed them. The Irishmen were then known as Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands). That’s how the island got its name.
Do you know: Ingolfur Arnarson threw his chieftain’s seat pillars into the sea and decided to settle where they came ashore. It took three years to find them in a small bay.
