The Great Wall of China is actually a series of fortifications comprising several walls that are together known as the Great Wall of China. It is located in an east to west line across the northern parts of China. It was built between the 7th century BC and the 14th century BC.
Why it is special: What started as several different walls built to protect the Chinese states and empires from nomadic invasions and raids soon became a bigger and stronger fortification that ran a total length of 21,196 km. The wall is built of stone, brick, tamped earth and wood.
